Now, we all know that Halloween has been associated with kids going out trick-or-treating and coming back with probably more candy than they'll ever be able to eat.

They actually end up sharing it; parents take bowls and bags of it in to work to share around the office so their kids don't get all of it or sometimes it's hidden for so long that even the parents forget where they put it and it all goes stale.

And with today's continuing attention and education on obesity in America and on helping young kids not to become obese, maybe it's time we stop giving so much candy to kids.

Even if it is only one day out of the year, there are a lot of great options for handing out healthy Halloween treats, or even giving out some non-edible Halloween treat ideas as alternatives.

So what alternatives are there to the traditional sugar-filled treats that we can toss in those goodie bags?

If you shop at discount stores or hit some sales, you'll be able to stock up on all of these alternative healthy Halloween treats that kids can pack in their school lunches:

  1. Juices. These are tasty treats come with their own little straws in disposable cartons. Kids love them!

  2. Fruity treats. Dried and rolled fruit snacks in packets.

  3. Crackers or pretzels with cheese snack packs. These are handy little treats that come in packages with spreadable cheese included.

  4. Granola bars. Major cereal manufacturers are always coming out with new flavors like S'mores to entice kids to eat healthier snacks. These are a great alternative to traditional candy bars and just as tasty!

  5. Microwave popcorn. You can now buy this high fiber, low calorie and fun snack in smaller individual serving sizes. Buy a box and open them up into a bowl for handing out to the kids.

  6. 100 calorie packs of cookies or snacks. Traditional favorites like Chips Ahoy are now coming in smaller bite-sized cookies packed in individual 100-calorie size packs.

  7. Yogurt covered pretzels. Pretzels are a favorite with kids too and yogurt covered pretzels are a great sweat treat alternative to candy.

  8. Bags of Trail Mix. Trail mixes often include M&Ms or other pieces of chocolate so kids are still getting candy, just not as much and the treat has healthier foods in it too like dried fruit and nuts.

Non-edible goodies are great to give out to Halloween trick-or-treaters too. Not every treat has to be something that can be eaten.

Think Christmas stocking stuffers when you're looking for alternative Halloween treat ideas:

  1. Packs of spooky Halloween pencil top erasers

  2. Sheets of stickers or temporary tattoos

  3. Small toys like the ones you get in kids' meals at fast food restaurants

  4. Gift certificates to McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy's

  5. Spooky laminated Halloween bookmarks - add one of these to each of the other treats and you'll be encouraging the little ones to read too!
